You have successfully built your computer and everything is set up and configured properly. Before you start bragging to your friends about how you've built your own computer and what a hardware expert you're, you must ensure that you'll have a functional computer from than on as well. If you're going to be connecting to the Internet (and you probably will) you must be aware of all the security threats you might encounter while surfing the web. Computer viruses, worms and all kinds of malicious scripts wonder around and millions of people get infected surfing the web or just while reading their emails. Don't think that it can't happen to you because it will. Noone can get away from these things without the proper security measures fullfilled.
Here are some recommended anti virus programs you can get:
Symantec Norton Antivirus
Probably the most popular anti virus programs on the market and it isn't without good reasons. Email, web, disk protection and a great live update feature that connects to the Symantec central and downloads all the recent updates ensures that this anit virus program keeps your computer secure and running. One of the drawbacks as stated in the Symantec Norton Firewall is that it's quite a resource hog but that's a drawback I can live with knowing my computer is secured and safe. Highly recommended and remember if you buy the program you'll get the firewall bundled with it and that's a great way to secure your computer as both of the programs are among the best in their apropriate categories.
Mcafee antivirus
Mcafee antivirus is also one higly respected and recommended program to keep your computer secure. It's got most of the features of Norton antivirus. One drawback is that it doesn't come with a firewall any more and one major advantage is that it isn't as a big of a resource hog that Norton antivirus is. If you opt for Mcafee antivirus you won't go wrong!
