Computer Security
You have successfully built your computer and everything is set up and configured properly. Before you start bragging to your friends about how you've built your own computer and what a hardware expert you're, you must ensure that you'll have a functional computer from than on as well. If you're going to be connecting to the Internet (and you probably will) you must be aware of all the security threats you might encounter while surfing the web. Computer viruses, worms and all kinds of malicious scripts wonder around and millions of people get infected surfing the web or just while reading their emails. Don't think that it can't happen to you because it will. Noone can get away from these things without the proper security measures fullfilled.
How can you protect yourself you ask? Glad to hear that question as computer security should always be one of your primary concerns! In order to protect your computer from these threats you need two kind of programs - a firewall and an anti-virus program.
Firewall Programs
A firewall is basically a program that controls your Internet connection and blocks other computers from establishing a connection to your computer or stops malicious users from hacking into your computer and steal/destroy the data you have on your hard drive. A firewall is also a program that checks what programs on your computer are trying to connect to the Internet and while for some of the programs having a Internet connection is fine, hackers might put malicious scripts acting like programs (even taking name of familiar programs) and that when getting out on the Internet leak your info to the hackers that than can hack into your computer.

Anti Virus Programs
If you've had a computer for a while you must have been infected by a virus at least once. It's so extremely easy to get infected if not the proper security steps are taken. Viruses are files that spread to your computer through email or if you download a file on the Internet and infect your computer. The viruses can be harmless but can also be extremely dangerous and can damage your computer a great deal. Anti virus programs check all the files you download from the Internet and if the anti virus program is any good they also check the emails you receive for any viruses that might be coming along with the email.
